The five part series posted August of 2021 where Jack explored one central idea: in what ways did the atomic bombs affect the development and style of Japanese cinema? In this series, which took 6 months of research and required the viewing of 60 films, Jack organized and structured his findings into three categories: atomic humanism, atomic absurdism, and atomic fantasy.
By discussing directors such as Kurosawa, Ozu, Oshima, Kobayashi, Anno, Miyazaki, and Teshigahara and films such as Rhapsody in August, The Human Condition Trilogy, Hausu, and Woman in the Dunes, Jack uncovered a new passion for film. Through his research, Jack believes he found a direct relationship between cultural amnesia, national PTSD, and the types of films produced under these circumstances.
